Integrative Medicine of Weston

Integrative Medicine

You’ve heard of integrative medicine, but maybe you’re still not quite sure what it is about. Integrative medicine is a healing-oriented approach to health that takes into account the whole person (body, mind, and spirit), including all aspects of your lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative.

At Family Medicine of Weston, we treat the whole person, with a focus on health and wellness, rather than simply treating the disease. As a holistic practitioner, Dr. Alberto Rengifo follows the principles of integrative medicine:

  • The practitioner and patient are partners in the healing process.
  • Appropriate use of conventional and alternative methods facilitates the body's innate healing response.
  • All factors that influence health, wellness, and disease are taken into consideration, including body, mind, spirit, and community.
  • Integrative medicine does not reject conventional medicine or accept alternative therapies uncritically.
  • Integrative medicine recognizes that good medicine should be based on good science, be inquiry driven, and be open to new paradigms.
  • Effective interventions that are natural and less-invasive should be used whenever possible.
  • Along with the treatment of disease, integrative medicine should focus on the broader concepts of health promotion and the prevention of illness.
  • Integrative medicine practitioners should be models of health and healing, committed to the process of self-exploration and self-development.

Drawing from his vast knowledge and education in both conventional and alternative healing methods, Dr. Rengifo provides the most comprehensive approach for you and your family’s care. Some of the most common illnesses managed through integrative medicine include:

In addition to conventional western medicine treatments, Family Medicine of Weston offers the following complementary and alternative therapies:

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This is done by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points.

The classic Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.

The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams and re-establish the regular flow through the meridians. The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that influence the body's own internal regulating system.

How does medical acupuncture differ from traditional acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a very old medical art, and there are many approaches to learning and practicing it. Medical acupuncture is the term used to describe acupuncture performed by a doctor trained and licensed in Western medicine, who also has had thorough training in acupuncture as a specialty practice. Such a doctor can use one or the other approach, or a combination of both, as the need arises to treat an illness.

What is the scope of medical acupuncture?

While acupuncture is often associated with pain control, in the hands of a well-trained practitioner it has much broader applications. Acupuncture can be effective as the only treatment used, or in conjunction with other medical treatments. At Family Medicine of Weston, Dr. Rengifo often recommends acupuncture to help treat a wide range of medical problems, including:

  • Digestive disorders: gastritis and hyperacidity, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhea
  • Respiratory disorders: sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, recurrent chest infections
  • Neurological and muscular disorders: headaches, facial tics, neck pain, rib neuritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendinitis, low back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis
  • Urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems
  • Physical problems related to tension, stress, and emotional conditions

IV Infusion Therapies

John Myers, MD, a physician from Baltimore, Maryland, pioneered the use of intravenous (IV) vitamins and minerals as part of the overall treatment of various medical problems. At Family Medicine of Weston, Dr. Rengifo uses an intravenous vitamin-and-mineral formula for the treatment of a wide range of clinical conditions.

What are the supplements used in the IV therapy Myers’ Cocktail?

Myers’ Cocktail is a form of intravenous nutrient therapy that involves injecting a “cocktail” of nutrients containing magnesium, calcium, B12, B6, B complex, and vitamin C directly into the bloodstream to improve energy capacity and cell function. When energy levels are high and cells can function at their best, patients are more likely to recover from acute and chronic conditions such as fatigue, depression, asthma, and more.

What are the functions of the supplements used in IV therapy?

Myers’ Cocktail is administered with an IV. When nutrients are given intravenously, your digestive system is bypassed and a much higher level of nutrition is directly delivered to your cells throughout the bloodstream. This form of treatment is especially ideal for patients with digestive problems, including bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease. Similarly, many conditions cause the body to use up nutrients at a much faster rate for healing, which can be aided by injecting extra nutrients into the body.

Myers’ Cocktail, which boosts the immune system, has been found to be a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of clinical conditions such as:

In addition to treating these and other conditions, Myers’ Cocktail is also effective in providing a natural energy boost. This energy boost can last for several days or weeks and can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life. Myers’ Cocktail can help strength the immune system as well, allowing patients who constantly get sick to effectively fight off viral illness.

Nutritional Supplements

More than 27 million Americans may be taking an over-the-counter medication and an herb, or a prescription medication and an herb concurrently. Different patient populations are at high risk for drug-herb interactions.

At Family Medicine of Weston, Dr. Alberto Rengifo has been trained to understand the potential benefit and harm of the use of herbs and nutritionals in treatment. He has the ability to understand the holistic process involved in the evaluation and recommendation of nutritional supplements. The supplements we use are reserved only for prescription by physicians, have a long history of use, and have undergone controlled clinical trials.

Homeopathy is derived from the Greek words for “like” and “suffering.” The guiding principle “likes cure likes” has its origins in ancient Egyptian medicine, as well as in Hippocratic medicine of the ancient Greeks. The practice of homeopathy was codified by Samuel Hahnemann, a 17th century German medical doctor, who formulated the Law of Similars, which states that a remedy can cure a disease if it produces similar symptoms in a healthy person. Homeopathic remedies are compiled in the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States, which is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Many conditions, both chronic and acute, can be effectively treated with a homeopathic approach. Dr. Rengifo is trained as a classic homeopathic doctor who uses constitutional prescribing for chronic disease and complicated cases where homeopathy is beneficial. At Family Medicine of Weston, we supply only homeopathic medications from the most reputable pharmacies.

Joint and Soft Tissue Injections

Injection techniques are helpful for therapy in a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Therapeutic indications include the delivery of local anesthetics for pain relief and the delivery of corticosteroids for suppression of inflammation. This is a procedure used in the treatment of inflammatory joint conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, tendinitis, bursitis (hip, knee, elbow, or shoulder), painful foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and occasionally osteoarthritis.

While the inflammation for which corticosteroids are given can recur, corticosteroid injections can provide months to years of relief when used properly. These injections also can cure diseases (permanently resolve them) when the problem is tissue inflammation localized to a small area, such as bursitis and tendonitis. They can also cure certain forms of skin inflammation.
